We’re Chained

August 14, 2011

I had been wandering around Irvington when I came across this toy horse chained outside someone’s house.

I didn’t think much of it until a friend informed me that there are little metal hooks on sidewalks where people used to leash actual horses to. When I went back to inspect these two shots, sure enough, there was that hook in the sidewalk.

After a quick Google search I also learned that using these rather outdated rings to tie up toy horses is a bit of a thing. Who knew! Since this encounter I’ve noticed the metal loops on the sidewalk (seriously, they’re everywhere!) and even spotted another toy horse on the other side of the ‘hood.

One of my all time favorite, quirky things about Portland. I remember being a kid and wandering around Portland with my dad trying to seek out the horses.

These horses are responsible for Dave and I being together! We had both taken a polaroid of the same horse on 11th & Everett several years ago and posted it on Flickr. That’s how we met :)

hohmygod, does a cuter story exist? That’s really awesome, Whitney!

Oh yeah! I found a few of these the last time I was in PDX.
